MOGADISHU, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Somali health ministry on Sunday confirmed 46 new cases of coronavirus, raising the total number of those who have tested positive to 436.

Fawziya Abikar, the health minister said five patients succumbed to the deadly virus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 23.

The minister said among those who have tested positive include 33 male and 13 female persons, noting that there was no recovery from the samples tested in the last 24 hours.

"Forty-six new COVID-19 positive cases confirmed today, 41 of them in Banadir region and five in Puntland, while five new deaths recorded," the minister said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The latest cases come amid concern about the sharp surge in the number of confirmed cases in Somalia due to limited capacity to contain the spread of the virus because of the fragile healthcare system.

Somalia has instituted measures to contain the possible spread of COVID-19 including closing schools, banning large gatherings and suspending international and domestic passenger flights. Enditem
