BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia is allowing thousands of students who were stranded in campuses due to COVID-19 restrictions return to their hometowns starting Monday as new confirmed cases continued to be in double-digit, the Health Ministry said.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that students in various colleges and universities nationwide would be allowed to cross state borders, which was banned earlier by the movement control order that has been in place since March 18.

TEHRAN -- The Iranian health ministry on Monday reported 96 new COVID-19 death cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 5,806 in the country, state TV reported.

Meanwhile, 991 new infection cases were registered overnight, bringing the total number to 91,472, said Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Monday with the national tally of cases standing at 138, marking the eighth day in a row without new cases since April 19.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, one more recovery was recorded on Sunday, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 124. The number of active cases still being treated at the National Isolation Center decreased to 13. Two patients are still in critical condition and both require Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and respiratory assistance. The rest are in a stable condition.

SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in offered Monday to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) resuming inter-Korean cooperation by jointly tacking the COVID-19 outbreak.

"(The South Korean government) will go and find the most realistic and practical way for inter-Korean cooperation. The COVID-19 crisis can be a new opportunity for inter-Korean cooperation as it is the most urgent and desperate task to cooperate in as of now," Moon said in a meeting with his senior secretaries on the day to mark the second anniversary of the Panmunjom Declaration.

SYDNEY -- Healthcare workers will be among the first groups of people subjected to widespread COVID-19 testing, with the aim of detecting asymptomatic carriers of the disease, according to Australian health authorities on Monday.

"A high priority would be health workers because they are at the front line, they are the people probably most likely to see cases," Australia's Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy told local media.

BEIJING -- Multiple countries are easing or considering easing restrictions gradually for social and economic recovery although the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide is nearing 3 million.

Global caseload at 0000 GMT on Monday hit 2,968,627, with the United States standing first at 964,937, followed by Spain with 226,629, and Italy with 197,675, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

MUMBAI -- India's central bank has announced a special liquidity facility of 6.57 billion U.S. dollars to ease liquidity pressure on mutual funds in anticipation of redemption pressure amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a bank statement said Monday.

The liquidity initiative to the mutual fund industry also aims to support them after Franklin Templeton fund house halted withdrawals from six debt fund schemes last week.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry Monday morning said 46 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 975 positive cases were reported since last evening across the country, taking the number of deaths to 872 and total cases to 27,892.

"As on 8:00 a.m. (local time), today 872 deaths related to novel coronavirus have been recorded in the country," reads information released by the ministry.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported one more death of COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 19 in the country, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

New Zealand will move from COVID-19 Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 3 at 11:59 p.m. local time on Monday, relaxing on some businesses. The country will stay in Alert Level 3 for two weeks before a further review and Alert Level decision on May 11.

NEW YORK -- Oil prices dropped noticeably Sunday night with the U.S. benchmark down more than 7 percent amid persistent oversupply concerns.

The West Texas Intermediate for June delivery slipped 7.2 percent to 15.72 U.S. dollars a barrel, while Brent crude for June delivery slid 0.8 percent.

WUHAN -- No new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were reported in central China's Hubei Province Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

On Sunday, the province reported no new deaths from COVID-19.

A total of 12 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery on Sunday, bringing the number of existing COVID-19 patients in hospitals in the province to zero.

ALGIERS -- China and Algeria will win the battle over COVID-19 side by side, thanks to bilateral cooperation which has produced positive results, Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Li Lianhe said.

In an article published by local mainstream media on Sunday, including official APS news agency, Li said that Algeria and China have mobilized their entire nations to fight this disease decisively, worked together and helped each other in a time of crisis.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's COVID-19 caseload reached 61,888, with the death toll hitting 4,205, the Health Ministry said Sunday.

According to the daily report from the ministry, in the past 24 hours, 3,379 people tested positive for COVID-19, up 5.8 percent, and 189 patients died, up 4.7 percent.
