Vietnam detects African swine fever in northern province

HANOI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever has been detected in a hamlet in northern Vietnam's Hoa Binh province, Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Local authorities said nearly 200 pigs had died in Ngu hamlet in the province's Hien Luong commune since mid-April.
The hamlet has nearly 90 pig-raising households with a total of 400 pigs.
Local animal health officials have taken the sample for test, and local households were instructed to bury infected pigs as well as sterilized to prevent the disease from spreading.
African swine fever started in Vietnam last February and spread to all 63 provinces and cities, leading to the culling of more than 5.9 million pigs, accounting for about 9 percent of the country's total herds, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Enditem
