KHARTOUM, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Sudan on Wednesday announced 57 new infections with COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 375.

Of the new cases, 55 were recorded in Khartoum State and two in Gezira State, the health ministry said in a statement, adding one new recovery and three new deaths were also recorded, taking the total recoveries and fatalities to 28 and 32 respectively.

According to the ministry, 10 out of Sudan's 18 states have registered coronavirus cases, with 344 in Khartoum State, 19 in Gezira State and three in the states of Gedaref and White Nile each.

Hamza Awadalla, a Sudanese epidemiologist and community medicine specialist, told Xinhua that the growing number of COVID-19 cases indicates "Sudan has entered the phase of community transmission."

"The difference between the number of recoveries and the death toll is very small, which is directly attributed to late detection of cases, weakness of our abilities and lack of appropriate treatment," he noted.

Awadalla called for tightening the comprehensive lockdown, banning the inter-state movement and starting epidemiological investigation to determine the real epicenters of the disease.

On April 18, the capital Khartoum entered into a full curfew as part of the country's measures to stem the spread of the deadly virus. Enditem
