MALE, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Maldives has confirmed its first COVID-19 related death after an 83-year-old patient passed away from breathing difficulties, local media reported here Thursday.

According to the Health Protection Authority (HPA), the patient suffered from breathing difficulties and died while being transferred to the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Wednesday.

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen said that the government would conduct an inquiry to determine if there were any lapses in providing care for the patient.

"If changes are necessary to the standard of procedure regarding the quarantine of people or collection of samples, that will also be done," Ameen was quoted as saying in local media.

Maldives has so far reported 280 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and is currently under a State of Public Health Emergency. A lockdown imposed on the region of Greater Male has been extended for 14 days. Enditem
