BRUSSELS -- Euro area economy contracted 3.3 percent in the first quarter year on year, while the broader European Union economy contracted 2.7 percent year on year, the bloc's statistical office said on Thursday.

Compared with the previous quarter, the gross domestic product contracted by 3.8 percent in the euro area and by 3.5 percent in the EU, according to the preliminary flash estimate for the first quarter of 2020 by Eurostat. (EU-Economy-Euro)

MOSCOW -- Russia reported a new daily record of 7,099 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, raising its total to 106,498 as of Thursday, official data showed.

SUVA -- Four people were killed on Thursday in a house fire on the outskirts of Labasa, capital city of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island, which is in the northern part of the nation.

LAGOS -- A total of 39 people had died of Lassa fever since the beginning of this year in the northeastern state of Bauchi, an official said late Wednesday.
