WINDHOEK, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's tourism and hospitality industry will be allowed to resume operations after the country enters the second stage of its national lockdown on May 5, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism said Thursday.

Namibia's COVID-19 lockdown began in late March, with the government recently announcing a four-stage response plan with the aim of easing the lockdown.

Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta said that as Namibia enters stage two on May 5, all productive industries, including hospitality and tourism, will be allowed to operate if they adhere to strict health measures.

The minister said the measures include maintaining hygiene and social distancing, wearing masks, sanitizing hands, and disinfecting accommodation facilities.

The tourism industry, which employs around 120,000 people, almost came to a grinding halt because of the severe impact of COVID-19, and has been struggling to survive since the lockdown began.

Namibia has so far reported 16 COVID-19 cases, of which eight patients have recovered so far. Enditem
