BISSAU, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Guinea-Bissau reported 52 new COVID-19 cases in the past 48 hours, including the country's Public Health Minster Antonio Deuna, spokesman for the Interministerial Commission of COVID-19 Prevention and Control Tumane Balde announced on Friday.

According to him, out of the 94 tests done in the past 48 hours, 52 came back positive, bringing the country's total number of COVID-19 cases to 257.

"Minister of Public Health Antonio Deuna tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of government members infected to five," he said, adding that it was a community transmission case.

Faced with rapid progression of community transmission in the country, Balde call on the public "to respect the instructions, stay at home and above all, avoid gatherings".

Deuna confirmed on Thursday that three members of the government tested positive with COVID-19, including the Minister of the Interior, the Secretary of State for Public Order and the Secretary of State for Regional Integration. Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Na Biam tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

In order to fight against the spread of the pandemic, the government of Guinea-Bissau has decided it is necessary to maintain the restrictive measures that have already been in place, including the closing of borders, restaurants, bars, places of worships and schools, and banning gathering of people.

President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo announced on Sunday to extend the state of emergency across the country till May 11. Enditem
