COVID-19 cases in Maldives cross 500

MALE, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives recorded 23 new confirmed cases of the COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, raising the country's total number of infected persons to 514, data from the Health Protection Authority (HPA) showed here Saturday.

Twenty-three individuals including 17 Maldivian nationals, four Bangladeshis, one Indian, and one Nepali tested positive for the COVID-19 on Saturday, according to the HPA.

The Maldives has 494 active COVID-19 cases with six patients hospitalized. Seventeen patients have recovered and one death has been reported.

The Maldives reported its first case of community transmission of the virus on April 15 and the number of reported cases has spiraled since then, with migrant workers making up over half of the total cases.

Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru has instructed authorities to quarantine the most vulnerable members of the country's migrant workers.

The Maldives is currently under a State of Public Health Emergency and the capital region of Greater Male has been placed under a lockdown. Enditem
