Malaysia reports no new COVID-19 deaths for 2nd day

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported no new COVID-19 deaths for the second day in a row, leaving the total fatalities at 107, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that 68 new cases were reported, pushing the total in the country to 6,535 of which 1,564 are active cases.

Among the new cases, 64 were local transmissions, the majority being foreign nationals with the remaining four being imported cases. The health authorities said earlier that they had set its sights on screening foreign workers in the capital city Kuala Lumpur and the nearby Selangor state, the country's economic heartland.

On Friday, another 88 cases had been released bringing the number of those cured and discharged to 4,864 or 74.4 percent of all cases. Of those still receiving treatment, 18 are currently being held in intensive care unit and seven of those are in need of assisted breathing. Enditem
