Live COVID-19 updates: Indonesia's cases surpass 17,000

BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia on Saturday announced 529 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the Southeast Asian country to 17,025.

There were also 13 new deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,089, the government's spokesperson for the COVID-19-related matters Achmad Yurianto said at a press conference.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 930 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, dipping from Friday's high of 1,202.

A total of 930 new COVID-19 positive cases and 16 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh, Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana told a media briefing on Saturday afternoon in Dhaka.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Saturday registered 35 new deaths over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 6,937, according to state TV.

During an online press conference, Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, confirmed 1,757 new infection cases, taking the total cases to 118,392.

KABUL -- Afghan Public Health Ministry on Saturday confirmed a rise of 349 COVID-19 cases to 6,402 in total over the last 24 hours, the ministry confirmed.

The ministry said in a statement that 15 patients have died of the pandemic, bringing the total number to 168 since the illness broke out in February in the country.

WUHAN -- No new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported in central China's Hubei Province Friday, the provincial health commission said Saturday.

By the end of Friday, Hubei still had six confirmed COVID-19 cases, all in the provincial capital of Wuhan, including one in severe condition and one in critical condition.

MOSCOW -- Russia reported 9,200 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 272,043, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement on Saturday.

The death toll grew by 119 to 2,537, while 63,166 people have now recovered, including 4,940 over the last 24 hours, said the statement. Enditem
