BANGKOK, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's northeastern Province of Nakhon Ratchasima launched a campaign on Sunday to educate residents in ways to prevent dengue fever as the raining season approaches.

"From January to now, we have discovered 737 cases of dengue fever," said Kittipong Sanchartwiroon, director of the 9th Disease Control Office of Nakhon Ratchasima. "Therefore, it is vital that our campaign will teach residents how to rid mosquito larvae in still water."

The campaign involves village health volunteers going out to villages to distribute abate sand granules to kill mosquito larvae.

According to Kittipong's office, Nakhon Ratchasima had 737 dengue fever cases during January-April this year, which is 27.92 per 100,000 population, followed by Chaiyaphum Province with 223 cases, Buri Ram Province with 143 cases and Surin's 96 cases.

Kittipong said the hardest-hit group were people in the 10 to 14 age group, followed by the five to nine and 15 to 24 groups.

Therefore, it is necessary to step up the campaign against the dengue fever spread alongside the measures to stem the COVID-19 pandemic, Kittipong said. Enditem
