Live COVID-19 updates: Daily deaths in Spain fall below 100 for first time

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MADRID -- The daily number of new deaths from the coronavirus fell below 100 in Spain for the first time since the pandemic caused the government to impose a State of Alarm in the country on March 15.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services, 87 people lost their lives to COVID-19 in the 24-hour period to 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Saturday and the total number of deaths in Spain stood at 27,650.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Sunday reported 1,048 new cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 14,850 and the death toll to 112, the health ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 10,645 patients are receiving treatment, including 168 in ICU, according to the statement.

MOSCOW -- Russia has partly eased its coronavirus-related entry ban, allowing the return of foreign athletes and coaches, the Russian government said in a statement on Sunday.

"Foreign athletes and coaching staff members will soon return to Russia" as the cabinet has amended a decree issued on March 16 banning the entry of foreigners starting March 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the statement said.

TOKYO -- The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 22 to reach 16,337, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities on Sunday.

The number excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia totalled 6,894 after 22 new cases were recorded, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing that 59 cases had been released, bringing the total cured and discharged to 5,571 or 80.8 percent of all cases.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Sunday registered 1,806 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 120,198 since the outbreak in late February.

Meanwhile, 51 new fatalities were reported over the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 6,988, said Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the health ministry.

ACCRA -- The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Ghana has increased to 5,735 as health authorities confirmed 97 new cases on Sunday.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) said the number of recoveries has increased to 1,754, with 294 infected people under treatment recovering on Saturday.

DHAKA -- The number of new COVID-19 infections in Bangladesh rose by 1,273 on Sunday, the highest daily increase since March 8.

Nasima Sultana, a senior Health Ministry official, told an online media briefing that "1,273 new COVID-19 positive cases and 14 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh."

MOSCOW -- Russia has confirmed 9,709 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 281,752, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Sunday.

The single-day increase has fallen below 10,000 for two consecutive days, the center's data showed.

The death toll grew by 94 to 2,631, while 67,373 people have now recovered, including 4,207 over the last 24 hours, said the statement. Enditem
