BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Thursday reported a total of 57,581 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), with the number of deaths from the disease reaching 589.

According to the latest report from the Health Ministry, in the past 24 hours ending 9 p.m. Wednesday, authorities detected 3,964 new cases of infection and 45 more patients died, the most in a single day since the outbreak began in Chile.

ATHENS -- The Greek basketball league announced on Thursday that it will end the 2019/2020 season due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The decision was made at a general assembly of the clubs, which also crowned Panathinaikos as champions for the season.

QUITO -- Ecuador detected 452 new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the total caseload to 35,306, the Public Health Ministry said on Thursday.

In the past 24-hour period, 51 more COVID-19 patients died, taking the death toll to 2,939.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States would not close in the case of a second coronavirus wave.

"People say that's a very distinct possibility. It's standard. And we're going to put out the fires. We're not going to close the country. We're going to put out the fires," Trump told reporters when asked if he was concerned about a second wave of COVID-19 during a tour of a Ford manufacturing plant in the state of Michigan.

HOUSTON -- U.S. Harris County where Houston locates on Thursday announced new guidelines for employees as the "Stay Home, Work Safe" order extended to June 10 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced two sets of rules for the safety of employees at a press briefing. One set is for public-facing workers such as retail and restaurant employees and another set covers employees in the manufacturing sector.

ADEN -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Yemen's government-controlled areas increased to 193 on Thursday, as 13 new cases were confirmed.

The Yemeni Health Ministry said in a brief statement that the number of recoveries in the government-controlled areas increased to five since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus on April 10.

CAPE TOWN -- South Africa on Thursday reported 1,134 confirmed COVID-19 cases, the highest daily record since the country recorded its first case in early March.

With the newly-added cases, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa stood at 19,137, the highest on the African continent.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday with the national tally of cases standing at 141.

It marked the fourteenth consecutive day in the sultanate without new cases since May 7.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, all 2,679 individuals of COVID-19 close contact have completed their quarantine on Thursday.

TEHRAN -- Iran on Thursday registered 66 new deaths from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 7,249, according to the state TV.

During an online press conference, Kianush Jahanpur, head of Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, confirmed 2,392 new infection cases, taking the total cases to 129,341. Enditem
