Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil's death toll surpasses 20,000 mark

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BERLIN -- Germany's COVID-19 cases rose by 460 within one day to 177,212, the Robert Koch Institute said on Friday.

The death toll in the country rose by 27 to 8,174, it added.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic surpassed the mark of 20,000 on Thursday following a record 1,188 24-hour increase, according to the health ministry.

The number of cumulative deaths now stands at 20,047, out of more than 310,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far reported in the country, the worst hit by the novel coronavirus in Latin America.

MUMBAI -- Mumbai has crossed the grim mark of 25,000 cases with 1,382 fresh cases of the COVID-19 reported late Thursday, as per the update by the city's governing authority.

India, which has reported over 1,12,000 confirmed cases and 3,435 deaths, has Maharashtra state and Mumbai city constituting 37 percent and 22.5 percent respectively of the total cases in the country.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 2,973 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, the highest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic started, bringing the total to 59,567, the country's health ministry said Thursday.

It also reported 420 more fatalities, raising the death toll to 6,510.

BEIJING -- China and Russia will take the Year of Scientific and Technological Innovation as an opportunity to enhance exchanges and cooperation in fields including medical and health care and disease control and prevention to make due contributions to safeguarding regional and global health security, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Thursday.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a press conference when asked to comment on Russian ambassador to China Andrey Denisov's saying Wednesday that China-Russia cooperation in combating COVID-19 once again highlights the high degree of mutual trust between the two countries and their bilateral relationship will promote the further development of bilateral cooperation in the medical field.
