WELLINGTON -- Todd Muller has been elected as the leader of the New Zealand National Party, the party caucus announced on Friday.

Nikki Kaye has been elected as his deputy. They will lead the New Zealand National Party to the election on Sept. 19.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry said Friday morning that 148 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 6,088 positive cases, were reported since Thursday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 3,583 and total cases to 118,447.

KAMPALA -- The World Bank on Thursday said its board of executive directors approved 48 million U.S. dollars to help Uganda fight a desert locust invasion threatening livelihoods.

The funds under the Emergency Locust Response Program will help Uganda monitor and manage locust swarms to limit the growth of existing and new desert locust populations, the bank said in a statement. (Uganda-Fund-World Bank)

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 2,973 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, the highest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic started, bringing the total to 59,567, the country's health ministry said Thursday.
