HONG KONG, May 22 (Xinhua) -- More confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded in Asia-Pacific countries on Friday, as India witnessed the biggest one-day jump and Bangladesh reported the highest daily death toll.

India's federal health ministry Friday morning reported 148 new deaths and 6,088 positive cases since Thursday, taking the number of deaths to 3,583 and total cases to 118,447.

This is the highest one-day spike so far in the country, showed the data.

Mumbai has crossed the grim mark of 25,000 cases with 1,382 new infections recorded late Thursday, as per the update by the city's governing authority.

Bangladesh recorded 24 new fatalities, the highest increase in a single day since the pandemic began in the country on March 8, bringing the death toll to 432.

The rise in deaths came a day after the country reported 22 fatalities.

The total number increased to 30,205, with the daily rise of 1,694 new cases reported in the country in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time on Friday.

Indonesia's total cases rose by 634 within one day to 20,796, and the death toll rose by 48 to 1,326.

The Philippine health department reported 163 more cases, bringing the total number in the country to 13,597.

In a daily bulletin, the Department of Health said 92 more patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the number of recoveries to 3,092, and 11 more patients have died, bringing the death toll to 857.

Malaysia announced 78 new cases, pushing the national total to 7,137, and among these new cases, 25 are import cases while 53 are local transmissions.

One new death had been reported, with the victim having suffered from other health problems prior to being infected, pushing the total deaths to 115.

Afghanistan on Friday morning reported 542 new infections, bringing the total tally to 9,216, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

A total of 205 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak in February, including 12 deaths within the past 24 hours.

In Pakistan, the number of confirmed cases has risen to 50,694 with 1,067 deaths, according to the data updated by the country's health ministry Friday morning.

A total of 2,603 new cases and 50 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

South Korea reported 20 positive cases compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Friday local time, raising the total number of infections to 11,142.

Of the new cases, nine were imported, lifting the combined figure to 1,200.

New Zealand reported one new confirmed case after four consecutive days of zero cases, with the combined total of confirmed and probable cases reaching 1,504, according to the Ministry of Health. Enditem
