LISBON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Portugal on Friday reported 288 new cases of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, raising the tally to 30,200 cases, health authorities confirmed.

A further 12 people had died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in the 24-hour period, taking the death toll to 1,289 in Portugal.

The country's northern region has the highest number of deaths (725), followed by the region of Lisbon and the Tejo Valley (300), the Center (233), the Algarve (15), the Azores (15) and Alentejo, which registers only one death, with the Autonomous Region of Madeira remaining without a death record.

A total of 7,590 people have recovered from the disease, 1,138 more than the previous day, the health authorities said.

Currently, 576 patients are hospitalized. Of them, 84 are in intensive care units, while another 2,257 tests are awaiting laboratory results.

Health authorities also reported that 26,189 people are under surveillance in the country.

Portugal's Director-General of Health Graca Freitas told reporters that all safety protocols are being respected in order to release the full capacity of flights, a measure that was announced by the government for the month of June. Enditem
