NEW DELHI, May 24 (Xinhua) -- India Metrological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions over several parts of the country during the next five days between May 25 to 27.

"Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions over northwest, central and adjoining Peninsular India during next five days," reads a statement issued by IMD.

"Dry northwesterly winds are prevailing over northwest and central India for last two days and it is likely to continue to prevail during next four to five days. Under its influence, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over plains of northwest India and adjoining central India. Rainfall activity has significantly reduced over south Peninsular India, giving rise to development of heatwave conditions over parts of that region also."

According to IMD, on Friday heatwave conditions in some parts had been observed over West Rajasthan and in isolated pockets over Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan and Vidarbha.

The highest maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius was reported at Churu, West Rajasthan.

An orange alert was issued for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan that would come into effect from Sunday.

Parts of northeast India had been experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls during the last two days.

Meanwhile, intense rainfall activity is expected to hit northeast India during May 25 to 27.

"Under the influence of converging strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, northeast India is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls during May 25 to 27," the IMD said. Enditem
