More than 50 cases of COVID-19 confirmed at S. Africa's gold mine

JOHANNESBURG, May 24 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at Mponeng mine in Johannesburg, South Africa's Gauteng Department of Health said on Sunday.

The department said all the positive workers have been isolated and they have sent s team to trace the close contacts.

"The Gauteng department of health can confirm that 53 employees at AngloGold Ashanti Mponeng mine have tested positive to COVID-19. The management of the mine has indicated that the underground production will remain closed until further notice," said Gauteng Department of Health in a statement.

It said that it was informed by the mine management that 378 underground miners were tested and 274 results were out while 104 are still being processed.

Limited mining activities restarted in the country about a month ago.

In terms of lockdown regulations, employers are required to provide a workplace risk assessment plan that should include the provision of screening and testing facilities, sanitary and social distancing measures and measures to protect vulnerable employees. Enditem
