NAIROBI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya has commenced movement of transit cargo from the port of Mombasa to the newly established Naivasha Inland Container Depot, about 90 km northwest of the capital city Nairobi, the revenue agency said on Tuesday.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) said in a statement that the transfer will decongest and improve the efficiency of the coastal port of Mombasa.

"The facility (Naivasha Inland Container Depot), is anticipated to boost storage of cargo mainly those destined for the East African Community Partner States," the statement said.

The Naivasha Inland Container Depot is also expected to help contain the spread of COVID-19 as truck drivers will not have to go for the cargo in Nairobi or Mombasa.

KRA noted that the dry port is well equipped to handle the huge capacity expected from Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi at the facility. Enditem
