HANOI, May 27 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever has reoccurred in 155 communes of 20 provinces and cities in Vietnam, leading to the culling of nearly 4,000 pigs since early this year, Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

There is a high risk of the outbreak reoccurring and widely spreading that will seriously affect the restock and increase of the herd as well as pork supply, the news agency cited the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as reporting.

The ministry on Tuesday ordered many provinces and cities in the country to focus on controlling the swine fever, noting that the outbreaks often occur and reoccur in small households that fail to ensure biological safety measures.

The departments of agriculture and rural development were requested to send technical staff to localities to coordinate with them to handle the outbreak as well as prevent the fever from reoccurring and spreading.

Earlier this month, the ministry had called on the country's pig farmers to redevelop their stocks safely and quickly to meet domestic demand. The fever has made pork prices increase notably this year due to supply shortage.

In 2019, African swine fever spread to all provinces and cities in Vietnam, leading to the death and culling of about 5.9 million pigs, according to the news agency. Enditem
