VILNIUS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian government extended on Wednesday a nationwide quarantine until June 16 with new easing measures regarding travelling, border regime, businesses and public events.

"Under the new decree on quarantine, a lot will change as of June 1. Basically all activities will be allowed under certain security requirements including mass events in closed and open spaces with a limited number of people," Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis was quoted as saying by local business news website vz.lt, after the government's meeting.

In his words, the quarantine regime is still needed in order to control and manage the possible spread of the coronavirus within the country and possible new cases from people who arrive from abroad.

According to the government's decision, residents of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, the United Kingdom and people legally residing in these countries will be admitted entry to Lithuania if the COVID-19 infection rates in these countries have not exceeded 25 cases per 100,000 population in the last 14 calendar days. Two-weeks mandatory self-isolation rule will be abandoned for these people arriving to Lithuania.

The working hours of bars, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and other places of entertainment have been extended by the government from 8 a.m.- 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.-11 p.m.

From June 1 to June 15, cultural, sports and other events can be held outdoors when participants do not leave their vehicles or with no more than 300 participants respecting a social distance of at least 1 meter. Indoor events can be held with no more than 100 participants.

According to the Ministry of Health, Lithuania had reported a total of 1,647 confirmed cases of COVID-19 by Wednesday morning. To date, 66 people have died of the virus-caused disease and 1,184 have recovered. Enditem
