Russian, Japanese FMs discuss bilateral relations over phone

MOSCOW, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed bilateral relations with his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi over the phone on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The two sides discussed "topical issues of Russian-Japanese relations with emphasis on the tasks of comprehensive development of interaction in all areas, and practical cooperation, including in the fight against the spread of new coronavirus infection," the statement said.

Lavrov and Motegi confirmed mutual readiness for promoting political dialogue at all levels, expanding trade and investment cooperation, and strengthening the legal framework, it said.

Lavrov emphasized the fundamental importance of accelerating work on elaborating confidence-building measures in the field of security and rapprochement of positions in international affairs in order to give a new quality to bilateral relations, the ministry said.

Lavrov and Motegi agreed to proceed with the implementation of a large-scale project, the year of Russian-Japanese interregional and twin-city exchanges, aimed at strengthening good neighborliness and the diverse ties between the peoples of the two countries after the pandemic, it said. Enditem
