BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

JOHANNESBURG -- As lockdown regulations are being eased in South Africa, a total of 8 million workers are set to return to work on June 1, according to the government.

Speaking to the media during the National Coronavirus Command Council briefing on Thursday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said precautionary measures should be observed at work.

"Employers must ensure that the 1.5-meter distance is maintained among employees. We will have to limit the number of people in the workplace, so that we minimize the chance of infection," she said.

Dlamani-Zuma said the hospitality industry would remain closed during the level-three lockdown, gatherings would remain prohibited together with places of entertainment being closed.

MANILA -- The Philippines has released a total of 22,522 inmates in an effort to decongest the country's overcrowded jails amid a rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country, a Supreme Court official said on Friday.

Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez said the 22,522 prisoners were set free over the time since a lockdown imposed in mid-March in order to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

SANAA -- Health authorities in the Houthi rebel-held Yemeni capital Sanaa on Friday announced the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in several provinces in northern Yemen.

"We confirm the disease is rife ... there are so many COVID-19 cases in several provinces including the capital Sanaa," the health authorities said in a statement.

VIENTIANE -- Lao government has warned of a possible second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, as the country eased some restrictions since May 18.

Authorities and people nationwide must continue their efforts in implementing preventive measures to prevent the second wave of COVID-19 outbreak, Lao Minister of Health Bounkong Syhavong told a press conference on Friday.

It was essential that every person and all relevant authorities strictly abide by the "new normal" guidelines and rules laid down by the government to prevent the further spread of the virus, he said.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 678 within one day to 25,216, with the death toll adding by 24 to 1,520, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference on Friday.

According to him, 252 more people had been discharged from hospitals, as the total number of recovered patients stood at 6,492.

The pandemic has spread to all the 34 provinces in the archipelagic country. Authorities conducted coronavirus tests in the affected areas and ordered the public to always wear masks to curb the spread.

KIEV -- Ukraine recorded 429 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, taking its total tally to 22,811, with 679 deaths, the health ministry said.

As of Friday, 1,693 children and 4,411 health workers have been diagnosed with COVID-19, while 8,934 patients have recovered.

On May 20, the Ukrainian government introduced adaptive quarantine measures, which are running from May 22 till June 22.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh confirmed 2,523 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the highest daily rise since the start of the pandemic in the country on March 8, bringing its total tally to 42,844.

Professor Nasima Sultana, a senior health ministry official, told an online media briefing in Dhaka that 23 more people including 19 men and four women died in the last 24 hours.

According to the official, 11,301 samples were tested in the 49 labs in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh. Meanwhile, 590 more patients were released from hospitals and clinics, bringing the number of recovered patients in the country to 9,015.

SYDNEY -- The number of cases on board the live animal export ship, Al Kuwait, which is docked in the Australian state of Western Australia (WA), jumped to 20 on Friday, with eight new positive tests.

WA Health Minister Roger Cook revealed that all 48 crew have been tested and the ten who remained on the ship all returned negative results.

Australian authorities are still questioning why the ship was allowed to dock at Fremantle Port after returning from the Middle East on May 22, despite the fact that three crew members had displayed high body temperatures.

ISLAMABAD -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan has risen to 64,028 with 1,317 deaths, according to the data updated by the country's health ministry Friday morning.
