Live COVID-19 updates: Belarus reports 905 new cases, total reaches 40,764

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MINSK -- Belarus confirmed 905 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking its total to 40,764, according to the country's health ministry.

Of all the country's confirmed cases, 17,390 people have recovered so far, while 224 with chronic diseases have died, the ministry said.

MANILA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines on Friday reached 16,634, after the health authorities reported 1,046 more cases in the country.

The Department of Health (DOH) said in a daily bulletin that, of these, 46 are newly validated cases while 1,000 are delayed cases.

ACCRA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Ghana has increased to 7,616, with 313 new cases confirmed as of Friday, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) said.

The GHS also reported nine more recoveries, raising the total of recovered cases to 2,421; the number of COVID-19-related deaths remains at 34.

LISBON -- The COVID-19 pandemic caused a 2.3 percent drop in the Portuguese economy in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period last year, said the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Friday.

The drop was even greater, at 3.8 percent, when January, February and March are compared with the three preceding months.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon's COVID-19 infections increased on Friday by four cases to 1,172 while the death toll remained unchanged at 26, the National News Agency reported.

The Lebanese cabinet has imposed a few days ago a fine of 50,000 Lebanese pounds (33 U.S. dollars) on those who do not wear masks while walking on the streets or using public transportation.

MADRID -- About 70 percent of Spain's population will enjoy further relaxation on restrictions in place to control the spread of COVID-19 as it enters Phase 2 of its restriction plans on Monday, the Spanish Ministry for Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services said Wednesday.

Phase 2 allows commercial centers, restaurants, cinemas and theaters, among other businesses, to open at a limited capacity. Outdoor exercise and access to beaches is also permitted, alongside social distancing guidelines.

BEIJING -- The All-China Women's Federation has honored a nurse who sacrificed her life to the fight against COVID-19.

Liang Xiaoxia, 28, who died on May 26, was honored as a national-level female role model. She died after doctors could not revive her as she passed out while working in an isolation ward in Wuhan, the hardest-hit city in central China's Hubei Province.

Liang, who came from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, arrived in Wuhan to help combat the coronavirus on February 21. Enditem
