TIRANA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Presence of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Albania donated to Albania's Border Police protective equipment against COVID-19, OSCE Presence wrote on Facebook on Friday.

The donation includes infra-red thermometers, plastic face shields, carbon face masks, disinfectants and full protection body suits, OSCE Presence in Albania wrote.

The personal protective equipment will be distributed to all border-crossing points, ports and Tirana International Airport in Albania.

The donation comes at a time when Albanian authorities have announced they will open land borders with neighboring countries on June 1.

"I thank you for this donation and for the support and assistance that the OSCE has continuously given to the State Police and specifically to the Border Police," said General Director of the Albanian State Police Ardi Veliu.

"With the opening of borders, the Border Police will be faced with new challenges regarding physical distancing and contact with citizens, therefore we need to be prepared and fully-equipped," Veliu said.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on National Security on Friday, Veliu said that 25 police officers have been infected with COVID-19 since the outbreak in Albania.

"From the total number of infected police officers, nine were hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Hospital and are fully recovered now," Veliu said.

In the last 24 hours, according to health authorities, 23 new COVID-19 cases and 28 new recoveries were registered in Albania. To date, the total number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 1,099, with 851 recoveries and 33 fatalities. Enditem
