NAIROBI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Kenya plans to rearrange several events to be able to accommodate continental events which were postponed due to COVID-19.

Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei said the organization needs to find a way to select top athletes to events such as the Africa Cross Country and Africa Senior Athletics Championships, which were moved to 2021 and will likely clash with some international events.

However, of paramount importance is the need to get athletes back on the track to train and regain their fitness without incurring injuries or burnout, with many competitions lined up in a very short period of time.

World Athletics has announced a possible return to action from August and with no proper preparation owing to the three months of lockdown, doctors and physios have warned that many athletes may incur injuries.

"When we start, the focus will be on the Diamond League and Continental Tour because those are the only major events in World Athletics calendar. But we also have Africa competitions coming up starting early 2021, which we must factor into our program," Tuwei said.

Tuwei called on races to be organized nationwide to prepare athletes for the future events.

With government stimulus package to bail out athletes, Tuwei is hopeful that many will recover to reclaim their stake in the global athletics world. Enditem
