SUVA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- A Fijian COVID-19 patient was charged on Saturday for breaching self-quarantine in Labasa, capital of Fiji's second largest island of Vanua Levu.
According to Fijivillage, a local news website, the 54-year-old Mohammad Saheed, Fiji's ninth COVID-19 patient from the village of Soasoa near Labasa, appeared in a special court sitting at the Labasa Magistrates Court.
He was charged with one count of failure to comply with the directives from health officials in March to self-quarantine for 14 days.
Saheed, who has fully recovered from the deadly virus, has been granted a bail of 1,000 Fijian dollars (about 451 U.S. dollars). As part of the bail conditions, he has been ordered to report to the Labasa police station once every fortnight.
Saheed returned from India in March and allegedly spread COVID-19 to a few people in Fiji. The Fijian Ministry of Health had earlier confirmed that they were able to trace a total of 834 people who had come into contact with him.
The case has been adjourned to June 22 and the Fijian police authorities warned that anyone found to have violated the quarantine measures in the country would be charged and arrested.
Currenly, Fiji has recorded a total of 18 COVID-19 cases since March 19, of which 15 have recovered.
To further curb the spread of the deadly virus, Fiji still maintains the nationwide curfew from March 30. Enditem
