Live COVID-19 updates: India reports biggest daily rises in both new cases, deaths

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in India surpassed the 180,000-mark, reaching 182,143, on Sunday, as the death toll crossed the 5,000-mark, reaching 5,164, said the data issued by the federal health ministry.

As many as 193 new deaths due to the COVID-19 and 8,380 new positive cases were reported since Saturday in the country.

This was the biggest spike both in the numbers of cases and deaths in the country so far.

BEIJING -- The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector eased to 50.6 in May from 50.8 in April, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Sunday.

Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, external demand remained sluggish, with the sub-index measuring new export orders standing at a historically low level of 35.3, NBS data showed.

THIMPHU -- Bhutan reported 10 positive COVID-19 cases, the highest daily jump, bringing the total cases to 43, the Health Ministry of Bhutan said Sunday morning.

CAIRO -- Turkey's COVID-19 cases on Saturday exceeded 163,000 with more than 980 new infections. Meanwhile, Iran witnessed a higher surge of coronavirus cases with the tally approaching 149,000.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Turkey, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East, climbed to 163,103 after 983 new infections were reported, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted.

CAIRO -- Egyptian Health Ministry reported on Saturday 1,367 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily record, raising the country's total infections to 23,449.

Thirty-four new fatalities have also been recorded, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 913, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement. Enditem
