KATHMANDU, June 1 (Xinhua) -- With the confirmation of 226 new cases on Monday, Nepal has seen the highest single day spike of COVID-19 cases, and the total tally has surged to 1,798.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), 213 males and 13 females tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

In view of the rising COVID-19 cases, the ministry is preparing to upgrade criteria meeting quarantine facilities into isolation wards.

"We are thinking of developing and upgrading such facilities with the available resources to keep infected people who don't have symptoms of COVID-19," said Bikash Devkota, spokesperson at MoHP, adding that those with symptoms will be kept in hospitals.

The country has been seeing record high cases each day despite the continuation of nationwide lockdown since March 24. Meanwhile, thousands of migrant workers are entering the country through Nepal-India borders.

Of the total 77 districts of Nepal, people from 59 districts have been affected from the COVID-19 infection.

The Himalayan country so far has recorded eight deaths due to COVID-19 whereas 221 have recovered and returned home. Enditem
