THE HAGUE, June 1 (Xinhua) -- About 3,000 people demonstrated on Monday in Dam Square in Amsterdam against racism.

The demonstration resonated with days of protests in the United States over the death of unarmed black American George Floydm who died of suffocation while in police custody in Minneapolis.

Organizers of the protest in Amsterdam stated that "institutional racist violence against black people is a problem that also occurs in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe."

Many protesters wore face masks and initially kept their social distance in line with the measures against the spread of the novel coronavirus, but as more and more people turned up, keeping a distance became impossible.

Some politicians expressed their disapproval with the demonstration going ahead and breaching the anti-virus rules.

Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema nevertheless told the local TV channel AT5 that the demonstration was too important to intervene. "Moreover, people are responsible themselves," she added. Enditem
