NEW DELHI, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients Tuesday increased to 48.07 percent, India's federal health ministry said.

"Till now, 95,527 patients have been cured and 97,581 patients are under active medical supervision," the ministry said.

For the third straight day, India recorded over 8,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a day.

During the last 24 hours, 8,171 fresh positive cases and 204 deaths were reported in the country. The nationwide toll has risen to 5,598.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said 3.9 million samples have been tested until Tuesday morning.

A nationwide lockdown, now in its fifth phase, was imposed on March 25 in India to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to officials, this period also marks the first phase of unlocking in an effort to bring economy and ordinary life to normal in a controlled manner. Enditem
