Live COVID-19 updates: Confirmed cases worldwide top 6.8 mln

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAIRO -- Egypt registered on Saturday 1,497 daily new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 32,612, said the health ministry.

This is the 10th consecutive day for Egypt's COVID-19 daily infections to exceed 1,000.

BEIJING-- China on Sunday issued a white paper on the country's battle against COVID-19.

The white paper, titled "Fighting COVID-19: China in Action," was issued by the State Council Information Office.

NEW YORK -- Confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide topped 6.8 million on Saturday, reaching 6,800,604 as of 1:33 p.m. (1733 GMT), according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

A total of 396,591 people worldwide have died of the disease, the data showed.

LONDON -- Another 204 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Friday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 40,465, the British Department of Health and Social Care said Saturday.

As of Saturday morning, 284,868 people have tested positive, a daily increase of 1,557, said the department.

ROME -- Italy recorded another 72 COVID-19 victims in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 33,846, the Civil Protection Department said on Saturday.

Total active infections stood at 35,877, a decrease of 1,099 from Friday. Meanwhile, another 1,297 COVID-19 patients recovered, bringing the total to 165,078 on Saturday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 344 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 37,527.

Of the new cases, 98 percent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing. Enditem
