WINDHOEK, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's management plan for the wild horses in the Namib Naukluft and the Tsau //Khaeb National Parks has contributed to the significant population recovery, Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta said Thursday.

According to Shifeta, the country is encouraged by a larger than expected number of new-born foals, which is encouraging for the future stabilization and growth of the population.

"The ministry conducted a full count of the horse's population and there are now an estimated 75 horses at Garub with a herd structure consisting of 37 stallions, 27 mares and 11 foals," Shifeta said.

The plight of the wild horses had been of great concern to horse lovers as their population continued to drop.

The horses were under threat of extinction as their population was drastically reduced due to predators, particularly hyenas that target the foals.

Environment Ministry statistics show that in the 1980s, the population of the horses was estimated at around 160. Enditem
