MAPUTO, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Mozambique rose to 509 on Friday, as 20 new positive cases were registered in the last 24 hours, health authorities announced on Friday.

Among the new cases, 18 are of Mozambican nationality and two are foreigners (one British and one Malawian), said the Director-General of the National Health Institute (INS) Ilesh Jani at a daily press conference.

There is also one more recovered, making a total of 145 people free of the disease, he said.

"The diagnosed cases are in isolation at home, while the process of mapping their contacts is underway," he said.

The health official said that the society needs to find a balance between controlling the epidemic and the reopening of the country's economy, and preventive measures should be given priority within various sectors such as economy and education.

Among the confirmed cases, 50 cases are imported and 459 are locally transmitted. The deaths caused by COVID-19 remain at two. Enditem
