Live COVID-19 updates: Indian state crosses 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MUMBAI -- India's western state of Maharashtra has surpassed 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday after adding 3,493 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, said an official update by the state government.

The worst Indian state to suffer from the virus now has confirmed cases of which 47,796 patients have been cured and discharged while 49,616 cases are active with 3,717 deaths so far.

DOHA -- Qatar's Health Ministry on Friday announced 1,517 new infections of COVID-19, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 76,588.

"Some 1,965 people recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 53,296, while one died, raising the fatalities up to 70," the official Qatar News Agency reported, quoting a statement by the ministry.

WARSAW -- The first wave of COVID-19 infection has passed its peak in all European Union (EU) countries except Poland and Sweden, the Polish Press Agency reported Friday, citing the latest EU report.

The report, issued by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), said that thanks to restrictions, the EU countries managed to reduce the number of COVID-19 infections by 80 percent in comparison with the peak of the pandemic.

COTONOU -- Benin on Friday reported 83 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 388, according to the official website of the Benin government.

One death was also reported on Friday, bringing the number of COVID-19-related deaths to five since the outbreak in the west African country on March 16.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 463 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 39,850.

Of the new cases, 18 cases are in the community, while 445 cases are Work Permit holders residing in dormitories, including in factory-converted dormitories.

Of the new cases, 98 percent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing.

WUHAN -- China's Hubei Province, once hit hard by COVID-19, will lower its novel coronavirus emergency response posture from level II to level III starting Saturday, a local official announced Friday.

Yang Yunyan, vice governor of Hubei, said the COVID-19 prevention-and-control measures will be adjusted and optimized accordingly.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry on Friday recorded 1,095 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections to 17,770 in the country.

According to a statement of the ministry, 39 more people died from the coronavirus during the day, bringing the death toll to 496, while 6,868 patients have recovered.

MAPUTO -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Mozambique rose to 509 on Friday, as 20 new positive cases were registered in the last 24 hours, health authorities announced on Friday.

Among the new cases, 18 are of Mozambican nationality and two are foreigners (one British and one Malawian), said the Director-General of the National Health Institute (INS) Ilesh Jani at a daily press conference.

JERUSALEM -- The Israeli Ministry of Health reported 226 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the tally to 18,795.

The number of death cases still stood at 300, and the number of patients in serious condition remained 34, out of 118 patients currently hospitalized.

The number of recovered cases rose to 15,310, with 60 new recoveries, while the number of active cases rose to 3,185.

NAIROBI -- Kenya's Ministry of Health on Friday confirmed 90 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total tally to 3,305.

Rashid Aman, Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health said the latest infections are from 2,419 samples which were tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of samples tested so far to 108,666.

Aman confirmed that the 62 males and 28 females who tested positive are all Kenyan nationals. Enditem
