Live COVID-19 updates: Hong Kong reports 8 more cases, 1,120 in total

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported on Wednesday eight more imported cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong to 1,120.

The new cases involved six females and two males, aged between four and 70, who returned to Hong Kong from Pakistan and the Philippines, the CHP said in a statement, adding that it is tracing related close contacts.

KATHMANDU -- With a record-high single-day spike in COVID-19 cases in Nepal on Wednesday, the total number of cases has crossed 7,000, a senior official of Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population said.

Nepal also reported one new death as the total deaths from the pandemic reached 20 in the Himalayan country.

Jageshwor Gautam, spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population said at a regular press briefing on Wednesday that 586 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours as the total counts reached 7,177.

DAKAR -- Senegal's Ministry of Health and Social Action on Wednesday reported 122 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total to 5,369 in the country.

The 122 were 111 follow-up contact cases and 11 community-transmission ones, health ministry spokesperson Alyose Waly Diouf told a daily briefing on the pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 10 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, pushing the national total to 8,515, the Health Ministry said.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah told a press briefing that all the new cases are local transmissions, with three being foreign nationals and seven locals.

SARAJEVO -- Chinese Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Ji Ping said in a recent interview with BiH State television that China and BiH have become closer in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release from the Chinese Embassy in BiH on Wednesday.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed our original work plans, but instead of becoming estranged, we have become more cooperative," said the Chinese ambassador.

NEW DELHI -- Total COVID-19 deaths crossed 10,000-mark in India on Wednesday, reaching 11,903, as total cases surpassed the 350,000-mark, said the latest data released by the federal health ministry Wednesday morning.

The data said that 2,003 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 10,974 positive cases, were reported during the past 24 hours across the country, taking the number of deaths to 11,903 and total cases to 354,065. Enditem
