Live COVID-19 updates: cases surpass 400,000 in India

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW DELHI -- The number of COVID-19 cases in India surpassed the 400,000 mark on Sunday, reaching 410,461, as the total deaths due to the virus crossed the 13,000 mark, reaching 13,254, said the latest data released by the health ministry.

The ministry reported 306 new deaths and 15,413 more cases during the past 24 hours across the country.

CAPE TOWN -- The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa stood at 92,681 as of Saturday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.

Up to 4,966 cases were reported in the past 24 hours, the highest daily surge since the outbreak in early March, Mkhize said.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 48 more cases of the COVID-19 compared to 24 hours ago as of 0:00 a.m. Sunday local time, raising the total number of infections to 12,421.

The daily caseload fell below 50 after recording 67 in the previous day. Of the new cases, eight were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 1,435.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 1,161, Ministry of Health said in a statement.

As with the five other cases reported last week, the two new cases were recent arrivals from overseas and both were detected within the managed isolation facilities, said the Ministry of Health.

ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia reported two new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the national count to 206, the country's National Center for Communicable Disease (NCCD) said Sunday.

"A total of 314 tests for COVID-19 were conducted across the country yesterday and two of them were positive," the NCCD's head Dulmaa Nyamkhuu told a daily press conference.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Sunday that it received reports of 26 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Saturday, of whom 25 were domestically transmitted and one was imported.

Of the domestically transmitted cases, 22 cases were reported in Beijing and three in neighboring Hebei Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report. Enditem
