PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Wednesday launched a cash relief program for 562,686 poor and vulnerable families of nearly 2.3 million people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the launching ceremony here, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said: "This program is to facilitate the living conditions of the poor and vulnerable people suffering from the impact of COVID-19."

He said: "It's a social assistance during the crisis, not a permanent program."

CANBERRA -- The Australian government has offered Victoria military support on Wednesday as the state struggles to contain a spike in coronavirus cases.

"Somebody has either not known or not done the right thing, so we need to be honest about that, but we need to keep in perspective that Australia, by global standards, is doing extraordinarily well and we will continue to do well," Minister for Health Greg Hunt said.

"But we are facing a challenge. Here in Melbourne, whilst in seven states and territories we have largely achieved a very stable state, at the moment, there is a spike."

SUVA -- The Fiji-China Friendship Association donated on Wednesday 136,250 Fijian dollars (about 62,906.6 U.S. dollars) worth of medical supplies to Fiji to help battle COVID-19.

"Thank you for this wonderful donation that will help our frontline workers, assist them with the work that they do every day," Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said during the handover ceremony held here on Wednesday.

PHNOM PENH -- China provided 7.22 million U.S. dollars from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund 2020 to Cambodia on Tuesday for implementing 20 projects in the kingdom.

"This clearly demonstrates Cambodia's active participation in the LMC and shows that China-Cambodia cooperation under the Lancang-Mekong framework is very effective," Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian said.

"We hope that the smooth implementation of these projects will help improve the livelihood of Cambodian people and accelerate socio-economic development in Cambodia," he added. Enditem
