UN Security Council renews DRC sanctions regime

UNITED NATIONS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Thursday announced the adoption of a resolution to extend the sanctions regime on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) till July 1, 2021.

Security Council resolutions has imposed an arms embargo on armed groups in the DRC, a travel ban on individuals and asset freeze on individuals and entities designated by the Sanctions Committee.

Resolution 2528, which won the unanimous support of the 15-member council, also renews the mandate of the group of experts assisting the Sanctions Committee till Aug. 1, 2021.

It expresses the Security Council's intention to consider renewing the mandate of the group of experts no later than July 1, 2021.

The resolution requests the group of experts to submit to the Security Council a mid-term report no later than Dec. 30, 2020, and a final report no later than June 15, 2021, as well as monthly updates to the Sanctions Committee, except in the months where the mid-term and final reports are due.

According to the UN envoy for the DRC, violence continues to be the main cause of humanitarian needs in the country. In a bid to prevent the security situation there from deterioration, the UN Security Council on June 26, 2019, has extended the sanctions regime on the DRC until July 1, 2020. Enditem
