RAMALLAH, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Friday announced 207 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the tally of coronavirus infections to 1,795.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said in a press statement that this is the highest number of cases in one day since the outbreak of novel coronavirus in Palestine on March 5, adding that most of the new cases were recorded in the southern West Bank district of Hebron.

The new wave of infections hit the West Bank in mid-June. Hebron, the largest district in the West Bank, is becoming the new epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic in Palestine, with a majority of the cases reported there. It was followed by Nablus in the northern West Bank.

The epidemic was resurgent as a result of contacts mainly with Palestinians from Israel or workers in Israel, according to Palestinian medical experts.

But al-Kaila said that some of the recorded cases belong to West Bank citizens who recently returned from Egypt through Jordan.

The Palestinian health minister said that 620 cases had recovered and five died since March 5.

She said that 1,170 cases are still receiving medical care at health centers in the West Bank.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the populations to abide by the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the deadly virus in the West Bank. Enditem
