TOKYO, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday as a continued rise in COVID-19 cases around the world clouded the outlook for the recovery of the global economy from the pandemic.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 373.08 points, or 1.66 percent, from Friday to 22,139.00.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 23.90 points, or 1.52 percent, at 1,553.47.

All industry categories retreated into negative territory, with iron and steel, marine transportation and air transportation issues comprising those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
