Macao's average occupancy rate of guest rooms decreases in May

MACAO, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Macao's average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 77.8 percentage points year-on-year to 12.3 percent in May, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistics service said on Monday.

The information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) also indicated that the rate of five-star hotels (5.5 percent) reduced by 85.2 percentage points, while the rates of two-star hotels (35.1 percent) and guesthouses (44.1 percent) dropped by 40.7 percentage points and 19.9 percentage points respectively.

A total of 108 hotels and guesthouses were open for business in May 2020, and the number of available guest rooms decreased by 12.4 percent year-on-year to 34,000.

The number of guests checked into hotels and guesthouses declined by 89.9 percent year-on-year to 116,000. Guests from the mainland (71,000) and the Hong Kong SAR (10,000) registered a decrease of more than 90 percent. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of guests extended by 0.7 night year-on-year to 2.1 nights in May.

In the first five months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 30.4 percent, a drop of 61.0 percentage points year-on-year. Guests in hotels and guesthouses declined by 70.7 percent to 1,697,000, whereas their average length of stay went up by 0.2 night to 1.7 nights.

In the first five months of 2020, a total of 253,000 package tour visitors were recorded, a fall of 93.9 percent year-on-year. Outbound residents using services of travel agencies declined by 88.3 percent to 88,000. Enditem
