AMMAN, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank said Tuesday it approved a project worth 100 million U.S. dollars to support Jordan's efforts in addressing challenges on education due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project represents an additional financing part to the 200-million-dollar Education Reform Support Program, which was approved back in December 2017, said a statement by the World Bank.

It aimed to expand access to early childhood education and improve teaching and learning conditions for Jordanian children and Syrian refugee children, the statement said.

"The World Bank is committed to supporting Jordan to face the multi-faceted impact of the COVID-19 outbreak," Saroj Kumar Jha, World Bank Mashreq Regional Director, said in the statement.

Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Wissam Rabadi also said in the statement that Jordan historically has made significant progress in increasing access to education and gender parity.

Over the past few years, the government has been focusing on improving education quality and infrastructure to accommodate the rising number of students due to the Syrian refugee crisis. Enditem
