RAMALLAH, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Tuesday announced 322 new COVID-19 cases in the West Bank, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections to 2,765.

The Palestinian Health Ministry announced that a 44-year-old patient and his elderly mother died in the district of Hebron, the hardest-hit area in the West Bank, taking the death toll from the coronavirus to 10.

Among the new cases, 82 were found in East Jerusalem, while 216 were registered in the southern West Bank district of Hebron. The remaining cases were found in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Nablus, Tulkarem and Jericho.

So far, 625 patients have recovered, the Palestinian Health Ministry said, adding that 12 cases are in critical condition, including two that have been put on respirators.

The new wave of infections hit the West Bank in mid-June. Hebron is becoming the new epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic in Palestine.

The pandemic resurges mainly due to the family contacts with Palestinians from inside Israel or workers in Israel, according to Palestinian medical experts.

But Health Minister Mai al-Kaila said that some of the recorded cases belong to West Bank citizens who recently returned from Egypt via Jordan.

The Palestinian authorities have reinstated limited lockdowns in Hebron, Nablus and Bethlehem as mosques and churches across the West Bank were closed again. Enditem
