Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil's cases surpass 1.4 million, deaths near 60,000

BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Brazilian Health Ministry on Tuesday raised the national count of COVID-19 cases to 1,402,041 with 59,594 deaths.

Over the last 24 hours, the country reported 33,846 new cases and 1,280 more deaths, according to the ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that so far 790,040 patients have recovered from the disease in Brazil.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Wednesday that it received reports of three newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Tuesday, all domestically transmitted ones.

The three cases were reported in Beijing, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

No deaths related to the disease were reported Tuesday, according to the commission. As of Tuesday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 83,534, including 421 patients who were still being treated, with seven in severe conditions.

Altogether 78,479 people had been discharged after recovery and 4,634 people had died from the disease, the commission said. By Tuesday, the Chinese mainland had reported a total of 1,918 imported cases, with no death.

HARARE -- Zimbabwe on Tuesday recorded 17 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the country's total to 591, said the Ministry of Health.

The number of recoveries rose to 162 including 11 people on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe recorded another COVID-19 death on Monday, raising the country's death toll to seven.

ROME -- A total of 142 people got infected by the new coronavirus over the past 24 hours, compared to 126 new infections on Monday, the Italian Ministry of Health said Tuesday in its daily report.

The total active cases decreased to 15,563, against 16,496 on Monday.

Twenty-three COVID-19 patients died over the past day, bringing the overall death toll in the country to 34,767. Meanwhile, a total of 190,248 patients have recovered, up from 189,196 on Monday.

RABAT -- A total of 243 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Morocco on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 12,533.

The number of people cured has increased to 8,920 with 87 new recoveries, Hind Ezzine, head of the department of epidemic diseases of the Ministry of Health, said at a press briefing.

She added that the country's COVID-19 death toll stood at 228, as three fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours.

RAMALLAH -- Palestine on Tuesday reported 322 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in the West Bank, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections to 2,765.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the death toll from the coronavirus has climbed to 10.

MUSCAT -- Oman on Tuesday reported 1,010 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections in the country to 40,070.

According to a Ministry of Health statement, the tally of recoveries in Oman rose to 23,425 after 1,003 more patients recovered from the virus, while the death toll climbed to 176 after seven more deaths were confirmed.

UNITED NATIONS -- The United Nations on Tuesday launched a new campaign to counter, by fostering personal behavior change, the growing threat of misinformation online, particularly with regard to COVID-19.

The campaign, called Pause, asks digital users to take the time to think about what they are about to share before posting it online.

"Misinformation is spreading faster than the virus itself, and is seriously disrupting public health efforts by dangerously distorting sound scientific guidance. It is designed to exploit our emotions and biases at a time of heightened fear," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a press release.

"But there are ways users can learn to recognize bad information and slow the spread. We are aiming to have the phrase, 'Pause, take care before you share,' become a new public norm."

RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia registered on Tuesday 4,387 new COVID-19 cases, raising the tally of the confirmed cases to 190,823.

The number of the recoveries rose to 130,766 after 3,648 more were added, while 50 new fatalities were reported, raising the death toll to 1,649, the health ministry tweeted.

LONDON -- Another 155 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Monday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 43,730, the British Department of Health and Social Care said Tuesday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

As of Tuesday morning, 312,654 people have tested positive for the disease in Britain, a daily increase of 689, according to the department. Enditem
