JAKARTA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Jakarta started to ban the use of plastic shopping bags on Wednesday in markets, convenience stores, supermarkets and other retail outlets in efforts to reduce plastic waste and combat marine pollution.

"The Jakarta administration bans the single-use plastic shopping bags in those places," head of the city's environment agency Andono Warih said in a statement.

The ban, which is stipulated in the 2019 Gubernatorial Regulation No. 142, carries punishments for shopping centers found violating the regulation, ranging from written warnings and fines to permit suspension and termination.

Jakarta-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya's President Director Arief Nasrudin has said the campaign against single-use plastic bags among vendors and customers has been carried out since the policy's establishment.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Nasrudin called on his subordinates to supervise the implementation of the policy in all markets across the city.

The ban, he said, is necessary to be imposed as the waste from traditional markets in the capital is one of the major contributors of waste in Jakarta, home to some 10 million people.

According to him, all markets in the city produce 600 tons of waste per day. Enditem
