MANILA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines soared to 38,511 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 999 more infections on Wednesday.

The DOH said in its bulletin that the number of recoveries further rose to 10,438 after 205 more patients have survived the disease, with the death toll increasing to 1,270 after 4 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease.

According to the DOH, 306 of the daily reported cases were in Metro Manila, 191 cases in the Central Visayas region in the central Philippines and 502 cases in other parts of the country.

Metro Manila remains under a more relaxed general community quarantine until July 15 in a bid to further reopen the economy.

In a virtual media briefing early on Wednesday, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte also said that Cebu City will also remain under the strictest enhanced community quarantine due to the spike of cases.

Duterte placed Metro Manila under enhanced community quarantine in mid-March to contain the spread of the deadly virus. On June 1, the president decided to ease the quarantine measures in Metro Manila to allow more businesses to reopen in hopes of restarting the economy crippled by the lockdown.

The Philippines has been in varying levels of lockdown restriction since mid-March.

Under general community quarantine, transport system in Metro Manila will be allowed to operate at a reduced capacity. Buses, train, maritime and aviation will be allowed to operate provided that social distancing is observed.

Mass gatherings are still prohibited. Only 10 people are allowed to meet up at a given time. Essential works, both in government and private, will also be allowed but limited.

Concerts, movie screenings, sporting events and religious gatherings will be allowed in modified general community quarantine areas, subject to conditions.

Barbershops, salons and other personal care service establishments as well as dine-in service will be allowed to operate at a maximum 50 percent of venue or seating capacity.

Other establishments such as gyms and fitness studios, travel agencies and tour operators can reopen at a maximum 50 percent operational capacity. Accredited diplomatic missions and international organizations may resume operations while indoor and outdoor non-contact sports and other forms of exercise are allowed. Enditem
