Live COVID-19 updates: Brazil reports over 1.5 mln cases, with 63,174 deaths

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Brazilian Health Ministry Friday raised the national count of COVID-19 cases to 1,539,081 with 63,174 deaths.

Over the last 24 hours, the country reported 42,223 new cases and 1,290 more deaths, according to the ministry.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, has been the most heavily affected by the disease, with 310,702 cases and 15,694 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 118,956 cases and 10,500 deaths.

Wellington -- New Zealand reported no new case of COVID-19 overnight on Saturday, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

The number of active cases in New Zealand remains at 18, all of which are in managed isolation or quarantine facilities. There are no cases of COVID-19 in the community, said the ministry statement.

ROME -- Active coronavirus infections in Italy dropped to 14,884 on Friday from 15,060 a day earlier, the Health Ministry stated in its daily bulletin.

It marked the lowest figure since March 13, according to official statistics.

Of all those actively infected, the vast majority, or 13,849, are isolated at home because they are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms, while 956 patients are hospitalized with symptoms, and 79 are in intensive care units.

SHANGHAI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai reported one new imported COVID-19 case and no increase in locally transmitted cases on Friday, the municipal health commission said Saturday.

The imported case was a Chinese student studying in France.

The student departed from France on June 28 and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on June 29, showing symptoms during the isolated observation period and was confirmed as a COVID-19 patient.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported on Friday 1,412 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total cases in the country to 72,711, said the Health Ministry.

According to Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed, 81 patients died from the novel coronavirus, raising the death toll to 3,201.

RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia's COVID-19 cases surpassed 200,000 on Friday.

A total of 4,193 new cases were reported, bringing the accumulated infections to 201,801, the Health Ministry tweeted.

The recoveries reached 140,614 with the registration of 2,945 new recovered cases.

The death toll rose to 1,802 with 50 more fatalities in the last 24 hours. Enditem
